Mission: Chantiers jeunesse is a non-profit organization created in 1980 to promote the development of committed young citizens aged 15 to 30. Context: With a rapid recovery of its activities after a slowdown during the pandemic, Chantiers jeunesse is looking for a Director who will support the expansion of its programs and its pan-Canadian and international positioning. The ideal candidate has a strong background in human resources and will be able to encourage, support and contribute to the development of a young, motivated and growing team.

Job description: Director

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Director, in close collaboration with the Assistant Director and the Management Team, is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Head Office and the following departments: 1) International and Special Projects, 2) Leadership Programs, and 3) International Talent Impulse Program. Duties will include:

Human Resources Management

• Manage a team composed of coordinators, permanent team members, seasonal staff and interns.
• Be responsible for the recruitment and hiring process.
• Support and mobilize the members of the coordination team: advise, coach, give feedback on their work, etc.
• Ensure the implementation of and compliance with health and safety standards and good mental health practices in the office and during field work.

Financing and budget

• Ensure sourcing and expansion of the organization’s recurring and non-recurring forms of funding.
• Work closely with teams to support them in managing their budgets according to our sustainable procurement guide.
• Coordinate and negotiate funding requests.
  • Note that the current funding application will be a priority for the first few weeks. The current funding agreement expires on October 31 and the new agreement is being approved and negotiated with the funder.
• Prepare the annual budget and submit it to the Board.
• Coordinate activities related to payroll.
• Write reports to funding partners.
• Monitor the budget and report to the Finance Committee on a quarterly basis.
• Establish a philanthropy and fundraising strategy.

Activity management

• Ensure that the organization’s mission is achieved and follow through on strategic planning and agreements with partners.
• Support the implementation of action plans developed by the coordination team.
• Mitigate risks (legal, operational, financial, ethical, etc.) related to all activities.
• Support, inform and collaborate with Board members on governance matters.

Visibility and Communication

• Represent the organization at official events and with government authorities and national and international partners.
• To develop and maintain exchange and collaboration links with network actors.
• Act as a media spokesperson.
• Build community and membership loyalty.

Qualifications and skills required

• A degree in social sciences, community development, management or a related field, or relevant life experience.
  • Having lived experience is an important asset. Chantiers jeunesse strongly values life expertise and will take into consideration the candidates’ life experience instead of formal education.
• Have knowledge of and measurable achievements in:
  • Development and management of partnerships.
  • Financial planning and management.
  • Search for funding.
  • Human resources management.
• Have a very good command of Fremch and English in oral and written expression.

Other requirement:

• Knowledge of community involvement and non-profit organizations in different Canadian provinces is an asset.
• Intercultural experience is an asset.
• Possess great organizational skills.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.
• Be able to travel in the Montreal metropolitan area and elsewhere in Canada for a few days at a time throughout the year.
  • Be occasionally available on some evenings and weekends for one-time events, training, and emergencies.
